President's Message 3-5-2010

As the nation limps through the recession, many towns and cities are hurting. One way to really make sure money stays in our communities is through supporting "Buy Local" campaigns that help local economies withstand the downturn. Dollars spent at community-based merchants create a multiplier effect in the local economy, meaning that from each dollar spent at a local independent merchant, three or more times as much typically goes back into the local economy compared to a dollar spent at chain-owned businesses. The importance of supporting local business has been building for the past five years and has now grown into national movement. We now understand we need local businesses to survive to support a healthy and viable community. Big government and big business can’t solve our problems alone, it will be small communities and businesses that will lead the way to recovery. I am proud to say, PCIBA is on track in gaining support in the community for our Buy Local campaign in Putnam and is working hard in multiple areas to support our local entrepreneurs.

We recognize a need to increase public awareness and are planning to work more with our parent organization, the American Independent Business Alliance to build stronger relationships with the public, business community and other nonprofit organizations. We have also recently formed a Consumer Involvement Committee who will focus on developing outreach programs and help educate Putnam residents on the value of choosing locally owned businesses. If you would like to get involved more we have volunteer opportunities available. Whether you have a lot of time or a little, every gift of volunteer time is valuable and makes a difference.

I'd also like to share we have developed a new and exciting marketing campaign that will give money back to our local consumers with the help of our marketing committee. The program will be launched at the Putnam Business Expo in May. Details of the new campaign will be discussed at our next general meeting which will be held on March 8th at Arturo's in Mahopac. Please join us for this event and show support for our fellow business partners who have spent much time on this project. Hope to see you there!

United we stand.
